One garment, four different numbers

The same dress can be labelled an 8, a 12, a 40, or a medium depending on where it was made. That is fine until you are shopping an overseas site and have to guess. Converting to the system on the label — then sanity-checking against the brand’s measurements — is the reliable way to order the size you actually want.

Not sure which size to start from? Take your measurements with the Body Shape Calculator, which walks through measuring bust, waist, and hip properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do US, UK, and EU sizes line up?

On the standard women's scale, a US size is four numbers below the UK equivalent, so a US 8 is a UK 12. EU sizes run higher again — that same size is an EU 40 — and internationally it sits around a medium. The converter and the reference chart handle the arithmetic so you don't have to remember the offsets.

Why doesn't a converted size always fit?

Because sizing is not standardised. Two labels can both call something a size 10 and cut them differently, and vanity sizing shifts the numbers over time. A conversion gets you to the right row on the chart; the specific brand's own measurements — bust, waist, hip in centimetres or inches — are what tell you whether that size will actually fit.

Why does converting from S, M, or L give one numeric size?

International letter sizes each cover more than one numeric size — a medium spans roughly a US 8 and 10 — so there is no single exact numeric equivalent. When you convert from a letter the tool returns the smallest numeric size in that band; check the reference chart to see the full range a letter covers.

Does this work for men's or children's sizes?

This converter is built for women's tops, dresses, and bottoms on the common ready-to-wear scale. Men's and children's sizing use different systems entirely (chest and waist measurements, or age and height), so use a chart made for those categories rather than this one.

A general reference, not a fit guarantee. Sizing varies by brand and cut — always confirm against the specific label’s own size chart before you buy.
